I’ve been a photographer for over 40 years. I’ve seen the importance of photography change over those decades—from the stepchild of the art world to becoming ubiquitous throughout our culture. I wrote about these changes in my book, Uneventful, The Rise of Photography.
My images’ form and subject matter change, depending on where I’m living and what my interests are at the time. Some are more defined series often exploring social and cultural issues. Others are products of being in the right place at the right time. And there are many I’ve done just for the enjoyment of the process.
I’ve always had an eye for the odd juxtaposition of people within their environment. I like the edges of the image and what might be beyond those edges. I’ve taken some of my best photos, turning around and looking behind me. I take my photography seriously. But I’m not always serious when I put the camera to my eye.
I was a college photography teacher for 23 years. Jobs took me from Los Angeles to Seattle, then Minneapolis and Baltimore. I finally settled down in Washington, DC. So, I’ve seen and experienced many things on this trek. Here are a few groupings you might find interesting.
