Information Design

Jeff Gates spends most of his Web designing hours at his day job as Head of New Media Initiatives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Before taking this position, he founded Eye2i, which created intelligent interactive, multimedia applications for web-based Internet and Intranet sites. Our projects ranged from business and industry-association pages to distance learning environments to artist and film sites.

Our designs have been showcased in Teresa Martin's and Glen Davis' book The Project Cool Guide to HTML, Crystal Water's two books Web Concept & Design and Universal Access, Peachpit Press' Elements of Web Design, 2nd Edition and Lucy Lippard's book The Lure of the Local. In addition, our site, In Our Path, was a semi-finalist in the National Information Infrastructure Awards and Jeff Gates' personal site, Outtacontext, received Baltimore Magazine's "1998 Best of Baltimore" web site.

Clients have included: the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art, The Children's Defense Fund, Claritas, and the Tire Industry Safety Council.

Smithsonian American Art Museum's
Posters American Style

Eye2i was Project Director and Designer for the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Posters American Style exhibition.

Posters American Style is based on the museum's exhibition which encompasses the last 100 years of poster making in this country. In addition to translating the exhibition to a web environment, the site expanded the notion of poster making to include social contexts and technical aspects inherent in the medium.

In Our Path

In Our Path is based on Jeff Gates' photo documentary on the building of "the last freeway" in Los Angeles. In addition to photographs and essays this site includes an interactive discussion area using a groupware called Screen Porch.
